Over the past year, we've all had to flex our creative muscle to craft solutions for a myriad of complex challenges, whether they be personal or professional -- and that's certainly held true for those in our Mean Green community. Our education alums and administrators, for example, have faced tough questions head on to generate ideas for how to keep students from falling behind, whether in person or online. Other alumni have had to get equally innovative, like Judge Emily Miskel ('99 TAMS), a trailblazer who oversaw the nation's first online jury trial, and Xavier Henderson ('14), a communication studies alum who has ensured his community has enough food and other essential supplies through his nonprofit For Oak Cliff.
But they aren't the only ones. Our Spring 2021 issue is full of stories of resilience, ingenuity, caring and, perhaps most importantly, hope for the future. And at UNT, our future is brighter than ever, as evidenced by a year of successes outlined in our recent President's Annual Report. As we move into summer, we wish you and yours the very best in the months ahead -- and we look forward to seeing you once again as we prepare to return in person for Fall 2021.

Cover Story
Bridging the Gap
After a year of fighting through the challenges created by COVID-19, administrators and teachers reflect on the toughest challenges they've faced, the biggest problems they've solved -- and the implications for the future of education. "It's like when Lewis and Clark arrived at the Royal Gorge -- what did they have to think about to make it to the other side?" says Jamie Wilson ('91, '99 M.Ed., '12 Ed.D.), superintendent of Denton ISD. "And that's where educators are. What do we do? All we know is there's no turning back."

Alumni Spotlight
Heart and 'Soul'
When Mike Jones arrived at UNT in the 1990s, he wanted to be an English teacher. But a viewing of Federico Fellini's 8 1/2 in UNT's media library inspired him to pursue filmmaking -- a move that eventually led him to co-writing the Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated Pixar film Soul. Beautiful Days Ahead
Xavier Henderson ('14) always wanted to make a difference in his neighborhood. As the director of strategy for the nonprofit For Oak Cliff, which he launched in 2014 alongside fellow UNT alum Taylor Toynes ('12), he's doing just that -- and landed on Forbes' 30 Under 30 Social Impact list as a result.
