Research on the Nanoscale

Through the high-powered instruments in UNT's Materials Research Facility — one of the nation's most advanced university research facilities for materials analysis — faculty members and students from physics to photography are analyzing materials on the atomic- and macro-length scales. Their work is helping them gain new perspectives on the relationship between humans and nature, nanomedicine, renewable energy and electronics. Enjoy a few photographs and learn more about a handful of research projects that require investigation on the nanoscale.

Collaboration Spotlight
In Symbiosis

A group comprised largely of graduate students from the College of Visual Arts and Design's Department of Studio Art used UNT scientific research as a muse for their latest artworks. Some of the students paired with other graduate students and faculty from across the university to learn more about their research and use it as inspiration for a variety of art. The project was the crux of Dornith Doherty's Art and the Environment, a studio art special topics course this fall that challenged students to develop their creative, critical and conceptual ways of thinking about their art practice. The resulting art was recently on display in the exhibition "In Symbiosis" at the Elm Fork Gallery in UNT's Environmental Sciences Building.

Research News
Grammy Nominations

Nine alumni from UNT earned nominations or collaborated on projects nominated in the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. The musicians were recognized across a half-dozen categories in the nominations, including two competing for Best Opera Recording. Winners will be named in the ceremony scheduled to air Feb. 4 on CBS and streaming live and on-demand on Paramount+.

Top Honors

UNT College of Science faculty have been recognized recently with prestigious awards for research in their respective fields. Assistant Professor of Physics Yuzhe Xiao earned the 2023 Young Faculty Award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a research and development agency of the U.S. Department of Defense, and Mathematics Professor Mariusz Urbanski received the Sierpiński Medal, which is granted to outstanding mathematicians with Polish associations by the University of Warsaw and Polish Mathematical Society.

Fall 2023 Great Grads

To honor its fall graduates, UNT is sharing stories of a few students who excelled amid adversity, some of whom have taken on impactful research projects that will advance understanding of topics within their fields. These students include biology major Rocio Caricia Alcantar, who helped study endangered fish species in Texas, and linguistics major Sara Dalanaj (pictured left), who traced the morphology of Gheg Albanian, a dialect of the language spoken in her home country of Albania. Read about these students and others in the Fall 2023 edition of UNT's Great Grads series.
