Texas University Fund Approved

Tuesday's election saw 64% of Texas voters approve a proposition creating the Texas University Fund (TUF), which will be a $3.9 billion permanent endowment to ensure sustainable funding for eligible universities – including UNT – that do not receive benefits from the Permanent University Fund (PUF). "This is a historic moment for UNT — and for Texas," UNT President Neal Smatresk says. "The TUF is a transformational investment in UNT, Texas higher education and the state's economy. I am thankful for the Texas voters — as well as Gov. Abbott and our legislators — who recognized the importance of passing TUF and the role Texas universities like UNT play in elevating the state."

Collaboration Spotlight
Growing Sustainability

Building a more sustainable world means going beyond addressing environmental issues alone. Recently, UNT's Advanced Environmental Research Institute brought that cooperative mindset into focus in its first conference, "Growing Sustainably: Partnering for a Resilient Future." The event gathered more than 125 professionals from university, industry and government sectors for discussions around prevalent sustainability issues from water to renewable energy as well as presentations of current research endeavors and practices in the field. "Our sustainability challenges will require more holistic, interdisciplinary solutions and working outside higher education by partnering with experts in industry, government and nonprofits," says AERI director Amie Lund.

Research News
Advancing Laser Tech

Infrared laser technology research by a team of experts from both the College of Engineering and the College of Science has received a $4.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense. The research team includes five professors – Richard Zhang and Tae-yul Choi in mechanical engineering, Arkadii Krokhin and Jens Neu in physics and Jeff Kelber in chemistry. The goal of the project is to investigate methods for maintaining temperature-stable lasers after long duration and high-power conditions.

Cultivating Latino Cultural Preservation

UNT faculty from the College of Information and College of Visual Arts and Design are working in collaboration with the Mexican American Civil Rights Institute to create a new internship program for graduate students. The American Latino Museum Internship and Fellowship Initiative will follow a small cohort model and provide professional coaching, mentoring and financial support for students advancing careers in Latino museums and cultural preservation studies. Additionally, the grant supports the development of a graduate academic certificate focused on cultural heritage stewardship.

Fostering Leaders in Food

UNT faculty have earned $800,000 in recent grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for food studies-related work, a growing interdisciplinary research interest at the university. As the U.S. increases its focus on cultivating a more resilient food and fiber supply chain, a team of faculty in the College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism are working to foster future transformational leaders to work in these industries through an array of new academic offerings, events and research experiences in development. Then, faculty in history and public administration are uniting on a separate research initiative. The Milpa Agricultural Placemaking Project will focus on creating an edible landscape on campus that supports new project-based and experiential learning opportunities for UNT students in food studies and allied fields.

Fulbright Honors

UNT has once again been named as a Fulbright HSI Leader by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The designation is given to a select number of Hispanic-Serving Institutions who have demonstrated noteworthy engagement with Fulbright exchange participants and have promoted Fulbright Program opportunities on campus. Since 1960, there have been more than 95 faculty and staff across multiple disciplines named as UNT Fulbright Scholars and Specialists. Since 1949, there have been more than 52 UNT Fulbright Student award winners. In the 2023-24 academic year, UNT had seven community members who earned awards from the prestigious program. They will travel internationally to teach and conduct research.

Watch: The Lab YouTube Series

Catch up on episodes of The Lab, a YouTube series featuring UNT researchers breaking down how their research in science, art and technology is revolutionizing everyday life. The most recent episodes feature Haley Zettler (criminal justice) discussing the possible connections between childhood trauma and substance use in justice-impacted populations and Huseyin Bostanci (mechanical engineering) explaining the new technologies that could help revitalize cabin air for missions to Mars.
