Enrollment, Research on the Rise

It's been another historicyear for enrollment and research at UNT. Fall enrollment hit nearly 47,000 students, up 5.8 percent — the fifth consecutive year for record-breaking growth. UNT has been instrumental in shaping higher education across Texas as well — accounting for 52.3% of the growth in new enrollees at state public universities since 2019. As a Carnegie-ranked Tier One research university, UNT is a catalyst for creativity, fueling progress, workforce development, innovation and entrepreneurship for the North Texas region and beyond. In fiscal year 2023, UNT garnered its highest ever total of sponsored research projects with more than $75 million in funding from top national agencies such as the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Education, National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation. The university also forged collaborations across the region, state and nation to advance areas from education, healthcare and logistics to artificial intelligence, workforce inclusion and semiconductors. "As we look toward the future, we'll focus on growing our research capacity, expanding opportunities for student researchers and ensuring our scholars have the support they need to make a difference with their work," says Pamela Padilla, UNT vice president for research and innovation.

Collaboration Spotlight
Advancing Artificial Intelligence

How can robots and unmanned aerial vehicles more efficiently communicate and make decisions as one? A team of UNT College of Engineering researchers will work to solve these issues with a $3.76 million grant from the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. The project will further foundational understanding of cognitive distributed sensing — the artificial intelligence technology that enables multiple sensors to gather, process and analyze data in real time. The research is led by Kostas Research Institute in collaboration with UNT, Northeastern University, Northern Arizona University, University of Houston and University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The UNT team, led by Yan Huang, will work specifically on developing foundational deep learning and real-time embedded AI-based solutions and a power-efficient mmWave hybrid beam forming system with phased array antennas for localization and swarm communication.

Scholarship in Nature Communications

Research from UNT scholars was featured in Nature Communications, one of the top peer-reviewed scientific research journals in the world. Raj Banerjee and Narendra Dahotre, faculty affiliated with UNT's Center for Agile and Adaptive Additive Manufacturing, co-authored one paper about their study of high-strength titanium alloys processed by additive manufacturing. Then, research about manipulating plant lignin in poplar trees for potential use as a biofuel out of UNT's BioDiscovery Institute, co-authored by Richard Dixon, Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus, made a Nature Editors' Highlights webpage about plants and agriculture research.

Watch: The Lab YouTube Series

Catch up on episodes of The Lab, a YouTube series featuring UNT researchers breaking down how their research in science, art and technology is revolutionizing everyday life. The most recent episode features Ronald Schumann III, associate professor in the College of Health and Public Service, talking about what emotional attachment to one's home and community can teach us about emergency management and responding to natural disasters such as floods or wildfires.
