Boosting Data Science Discovery

UNT was gifted $3 million from Vikas and Anuradha Sinha to support the creation of the new Department of Data Science in UNT's College of Information. The department, set to open in January 2025, will be named the Anuradha and Vikas Sinha Department of Data Science in recognition of their generous support, which will fund scholarships, professorships, special initiatives and research including a $500,000 investment in groundbreaking research within the data science field through The Sinha Research Fund. "We are deeply grateful for this monumental gift from Vikas and Anuradha Sinha," says UNT President Harrison Keller, Ph.D. "Their contributions will enable us to expand opportunities through our world-class data science program, transforming education for generations of students to come. Their commitment to our great university will leave a lasting legacy in the field of data science."

Collaboration Spotlight
Logistics Innovation

UNT gathered top academic, government and private sector leaders from around the region and nation recently to discuss how to effectively lead transformative logistics change. The National Science Foundation Supply Chain Innovation and National Security Summit hosted at UNT at Frisco marked a significant step forward in the work of the Texoma Logistics Innovation Engine, a UNT-led network of organizations collaborating to advance the workforce and mobility systems in the Texoma region.

Research Day

The value of collaboration and interdisciplinarity served as a universal thread through conversations and sessions at UNT's second annual University Research Day Oct. 4. UNT's Division of Research and Innovation sponsored the event to encourage faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students to gather in one place to share their research, connect with one another and listen to panel discussions about everything from tips on commercializing research and establishing interdisciplinary projects to understanding the importance of mentorship and staff support in a research community.

Mitigating Climate Change

With human activities significantly increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) techniques are offering a promising solution to help absorb and store more carbon from the atmosphere. Monitoring pH is critical to this process, yet current pH sensors face many limitations. UNT mechanical engineering professor Haifeng Zhang is working to change that. Supported by a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation's Ocean Technology Interdisciplinary Program, Zhang is leading a team with research collaborators at the University of Michigan and University of California-San Diego to develop a sensor that can better detect pH levels.

Working With NASA

UNT students Isaiah Sears and Javier Solis (pictured) had an opportunity they had only dreamed of before — to conduct research as interns for NASA's Johnson and Kennedy space centers. Their internships and research were part of a collaborative project UNT College of Engineering and College of Science faculty are working on with NASA scientists. The research — focused on developing more advanced heat transfer coatings for autonomous space vehicles — is supported by a nearly $900,000 Minority University Research and Education Project Curriculum Award from NASA.

Chemistry Education

In a recent episode of the Analytically Speaking podcast from LCGC International and Spectroscopy, UNT chemistry assistant professor Molly Atkinson and her graduate student, David Hamilton, shared results of a recent study they conducted surveying bachelor's-level chemists working in the industry and asked them the question, "What does the industry want new chemists to know?" Their research was published in the Journal of Chemical Education earlier this year and examines what instrumentation experience students need to be successful in the industry.
